Brown Grand Players to present “Almost Maine”

'Almost, Maine' is coming to Concordia, Kansas.
The Brown Grand Players will bring the fictional town of Almost to life in their rendition of the popular play on Friday evening, February 15, at 7 p.m. at the Brown Grand Theatre.
Almost is in northern Maine near the Canadian border. It never had enough people or got itself organized enough to be a real town. It's always been almost a town, thus its name.
"In Almost, life is hard," said director Richard Briggs. "Relationships are harder."
Briggs, the Artist-in-Residence at Cloud County Community College, was drawn to the concept of the play because it has some parallels to the town of Concordia.
"Almost is a small town full of lots of personalities," he said, then added with a laugh: "And bad weather sometimes. It's the perfect play to do around Valentine's Day because it's a story about love, loss, and relationships."
The play consists of seven separate scenes involving the people who live in or around the town of Almost. A cast of 12 actors will play all the roles in the scenes.
"I really liked that aspect of the play," Briggs said. "The large cast allowed me to bring in more of the Brown Grand Players and allowed more people in the community to get involved with the production."
Katie Mai, president of the Brown Grand Players, is playing three separate characters in three of the scenes, but the character of 'Glory' is her favorite.
"Glory is an adventuress who's going through a difficult time in her life," Mai said. "We can all relate to that. In this scene she's had her heart broken. She's really feeling alone in the world."
Zach Wohlbrandt, 19 years old and a sophomore at Cloud County Community College, is in two scenes playing two characters: Pete and Steve.
"What I really like about this play is that it shows so many different sides of love stories," Wohlbrandt said. "And for me, it's great because I get to work with actors who have a lot more experience than me on stage. It's been a real learning process."
City commissioner Sam Sacco is playing the role of 'The Man', but held back any further description of the character because he didn't want to spoil a surprise in the play.
"The scene I'm in involves a young couple who is dating," he said. "The guy asks the girl to marry him, but she leaves town without giving him an answer. He's devastated. But then she comes back to town and expects their relationship to be just like it was. But life doesn't work that way."
'Almost, Maine' will be performed for one night only: Friday, February 15th. Doors open at 7 p.m..
