Concordia resident reports receiving scam letters

Scammers posing as the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) are stepping up their game.
Earlier this year, Concordia residents reported receiving scam phone calls from people posing as IRS officials.
It was reported that the IRS does not call taxpayers.
Scammers are now sending out letters.
A Concordia resident reported to The Blade-Empire on Thursday that she has received two letters.
One letter from the non-existent Tax Enforcement Dept. Internal Processing Service Cloud County stated that the IRS has attempted to obtain delinquent tax payments. You have not responded to the prior notice(s) issued to address in your name. You must respond by the due date and you must PAY IN FULL OR CALL 866-628-5391.
The letter stated that if action is not taken, the IRS may be forced to collected $10,233 in overdue taxes by taking properties, which is called levying property, and selling them. The need to levy property will not cease until action is taken to pay the debt owned, your United States passport will be revoked along with your KS driver's license.
The resident called the phone number, but it had been disconnected.
A second letter from the Bureau of Tax Enforcement for Cloud County, which also does not exist, states that a warrant has been issued against the individual because of tax that has not been paid in full. This warrant serves the same function as a court judgement. The IRS uses the warrant in collection action, such as garnishment of wages and bank accounts, property seizures, federal tax refund offset and creation of a property lien. To avoid enforcement, call 866-721-8115 by June 19, 2019.
The resident contacted the Kansas Attorney General's Office and was informed that the spoofing is mail fraud and they should contact the local post office.
Area residents are urged to report these types of scams to the proper authorities.
