NOTC unveils statue in Jamestown

On Tuesday evening the National Orphan Train Complex (NOTC) in Concordia unveiled its first-ever statue in Jamestown.
The statues, created by the Randolph Rose Collection of Yonkers, New York, are dedicated to the Orphan Train riders and their stories. The statue placed at the Jamestown Library - the 28th statue in the NOTC series - honored Louis Meyer, who rode the the Orphan Train to Valley Falls, Kansas, in 1887 and lived in the Jamestown area for over 60 years.
Meyer's granddaughters Mary (Nelson) Michel and Barbara Morgan were on hand for the unveiling.
"It's wonderful to be able to honor our grandfather this way," Michel said. "He loved the Jamestown area."
Dozens of people attended the statue unveiling and the reception and barbecue hosted by the Guaranty State Bank & Trust Co. at their new location in Jamestown.
"We're grateful to the Michel family for sponsoring this statue," said Jamestown mayor Randy Smith. "It means a lot to our community to have one of the Orphan Train Rider statues here to honor them."
