CCCC slips past Coffeyville, 60-59

It wasn't always pretty, but the Cloud County Community College women's basketball team's gritty 60-59 victory over Coffeyville Community College on Wednesday was a much-needed lift for a T-Birds team still trying to get firing on all cylinders this spring semester.
Cloud County (13-6 overall, 6-4 KJCCC) survived a 39 percent shooting night, and a strong performance from a scrappy Red Ravens squad (3-16 overall, 2-8 KJCCC) to hold on for a victory that snapped a mini two-game losing skid.
"It's great to win. I guess that's the bottom line," said Cloud County head coach, Brett Erkenbrack. "We had to stick with it and make a couple plays there at the end to pull it out. I give Coffeyville a lot of credit, they've gotten a lot better and had a good plan coming in. The disappointing part is I think, for the third game in a row, we got outworked by our opponents and that cannot continue."
Coffeyville, which entered the night the lowest scoring team in the KJCCC and ranked second to last in field goal percentage, produced one of its best games of the season. The Red Ravens shot an even 50 percent in the first half (11-of-22) and were 15-of-16 from the free-throw line on the night.
The T-Birds were able to survive the scare thanks to timely stops and offensive execution, especially during the final minute of regulation.
Sophomore forward Scout Frame, who led Cloud County with 17 points, nailed a mid-range jumper with 52 seconds remaining that proved to be the game-winner, putting the T-Birds back on top at 60-59.
Cloud County was then able to get two key defensive stops, forcing a turnover and a missed final shot by Coffeyville's Julia Calafell that glanced off the side of the backboard as time expired.
"We had to get a basket and Scout finally shot a jump shot rather than plowing into traffic," Erkenbrack said. "It was a big shot to hit and then we got two good defensive stops…We had some tense moments there in the final seconds, but made a couple defensive plays to get the win."
Frame was joined in double-figures by redshirt freshman Cassidy Haufler, who finished with 13 points and eight rebounds. Fellow redshirt freshman Kamryn Collins posted 11 points and a team-high five steals and freshman Chase Siedlik scored double-digits for the second-straight game with 11 points.
Sophomore forward Mikaela Meyers was another key contributor off the bench, adding six points, three rebounds and three steals.
"Chase has continued her good play the last week or so and that's good because we really need it," Erkenbrack said. "We needed perimeter scoring and thankfully she hit some shots. I also thought we got a great performance from Mikaela Meyers. She's played great since Christmas here and I'm really happy for her."
Cloud County will now look to build off the win as it prepares for a tough test on Saturday at home against Cowley College (15-4 overall, 6-3 KJCCC). Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. inside Arley Bryant Gymnasium.
"We'll see a lot of pressure and a lot of threes," Erkenbrack said. "Cowley plays at a fast pace, they shoot the 3-pointer well, they're athletic and they press all over the place. It'll present a big challenge for us and a very big game for us, especially at home."
