Cupertino named Player of the Year

Sweeping both of the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference West Division awards, the Cloud County Community College women's soccer team would net a total of eight postseason honors as announced by the KJCCC offices.
The Thunderbirds had sophomore Franciele Cupertino selected as the KJCCC West Division Player of the Year and head coach Charles Long named KJCCC West Coach of the year.
Cupertino and sophomore Izabella Christina would both be named first-team All-KJCCC West. Second-Team All-KJCCC West Division honorees include Thaina Cavalcante, Julia Calvo, Isabella Bertossi, and Thaynara Soares while Gabriela Vargas would earn honorable-mention All-KJCCC West Division accolades.
Long coached the T-Birds to an overall record of 14-3-0 this past season.
CCCC had a KJCCC-best 14-match winning streak during the regular-season and an outright KJCCC West Division crown.
The T-Birds would be ranked as high as number-18 in the NJCAA Top-20 poll and finish as the only team in either division of the KJCCC with an unblemished conference record.
Cupertino garnered KJCCC West Player of the Year honors after scoring 12 goals and adding 12 assists while appearing in and starting 16 matches for CCCC this past season. With a total of 36 points, Cupertino would earn KJCCC Player of the Week honors on October 22nd and rank seventh among all KJCCC players in total points this season while leading the conference with a total of 90 shots and finishing second in game-winning goals (five).
Christina picks up All-KJCCC accolades for the second-straight year, earning first-team recognition this season after leading CCCC and the KJCCC with a total of 20 goals while also adding 10 assists for a total of 51 points (second-most in the KJCCC). The sophomore would appear in all 17 games for Cloud County, starting 16 while scoring four-game winning goals and being named KJCCC Player of the Week on September 10th.
Cavalcante earned second-team All-KJCCC West for the second straight season after appearing in and starting 16 games for the T-Birds this past season to help anchor a T-Bird back line that allowed a total of 22 goals in 17 games. The sophomore would score one goal and add four assists on the year while recording a total of 32 shots.
Calvo appeared in and started 16 games for the T-Birds this season on the back line, helping the T-Birds win 14 consecutive matches while also scoring the game-winning goal at Hutchinson to secure an outright KJCCC West Title for CCCC. With Calvo in the lineup, the T-Birds allowed just 20 total goals and saw their only losses come to nationally-ranked opponents.
Bertossi made a big impact on the Cloud County defense as a freshman, appearing and starting all 17 games for the T-Birds. The Ballito, South Africa native assisted on one goal during the year and took a total of five shots, while helping CCCC go unbeaten in KJCCC regular-season play.
Soares earns second-team All-KJCCC West honors after being named KJCCC Goalie of the Week on October 1st while helping lead the T-Birds to a 14-3-0 overall record in 2019. Starting all 17 games between the pipes for CCCC, Soares allowed just 20 goals in 1,369 minutes of action and made 47 saves while also posting two shutouts. The 14 wins is believed to be a single-season school record based on available data.
Vargas rounds out the postseason honors for the T-Birds, earning honorable-mention All-KJCCC West Division after appearing in all 17 games while starting 16 for the T-Birds. Scoring four goals and adding eight assists on the season, Vargas would finish with 16 total points while taking a total of 48 shots from the midfield.
