Thrash, Chavey pick up wins

CLAY CENTER — Qwinter Thrash, playing number one singles, and Brigham Chavey, playing number two singles, picked up one win each for the Concordia High School tennis team in the quadrangular hosted by Clay Center on Thursday.

Concordia scored five points in the meet.

Clay Center won the meet with 24 points. Ellinwood was second with 20 points and Marysville was third with 11.

Thrash dropped his first match 8-1 to Cale Tromp, Clay Center. He defeated Kevin Wicks, Marysville, 8-5 and fell 8-1 to Cole Ringwald, Ellinwood.

Chavey opened with an 8-0 loss to Eli Pfizenmaier, Clay Center. He downed Daxter Capp, Marysville, 8-1 and then lost 8-1 to Grey Ringwald, Ellinwood.

Evan Bombardier and Zakary Allen, playing number one doubles for Concordia, lost 8-1 to Taige Pfizenmaier and John Alton, Clay Center; 8-0 to Blake Spicer and Titus Wassom, Marysville; and 8-3 to Brayden Robi and Isiah Steele, Ellinwood.

In number two doubles, Concordia’s  Joel Gross and Hunter Nielander fell 8-1 to Brooks Craig and Anthony Davis, Clay Center; 8-1 to Tayven Wilson and Ian Lynch, Marysville; and 8-1 to Ethan Schloctemier and Philip Penner, Ellinwood.

The Panthers competed in the Ron Dahlsten Tennis Classic hosted by Smoky Valley High School on April 2 and placed seventh with three points.

Smoky Valley won the team title with 50 points. Wichita Collegiate was second with 44 and Hesston was third with 42.

Thrash lost his first match in singles, 8-3 to Jack Bushnell, Pratt. He knocked off Shelton Holt, Abilene, 8-1 and Eli Pfizenmaier, Clay Center, 8-6, before losing to Janmejay Patwardhan, Hesston, 8-4.

Chavey also played singles for Concordia. He lost 8-0 to Omar Al-Tabbal, Wichita Collegiate, and 8-1 to Eli Pfizenmaier; defeated Holt, 8-6; and lost 8-0 to Charlie Hylton, Abilene.

Bombardier and Allen, playing doubles, went 1-3 for Concordia.

Gross and Nielander suffered three losses in doubles play.
