#10 Clifton-Clyde girls basketball falls to #3 Linn in TVL tourney, defeats Washington Co, Blue Valley

WASHINGTON, Kan. — Competing in the opening two rounds of the TVL tournament hosted at Washington County, the number 10-ranked Clifton-Clyde girls basketball team defeated Washington County in the opening round before falling to Linn, and defeated Blue Valley earlier in the week.

In the play-in game versus Washington County, the Eagles won 59-26.

Running out to a 33-10 lead after the opening quarter, the Eagle defense limited the Tigers to only three points in the second quarter as Clifton-Clyde expanded their lead to 36 with a 49-13 halftime lead. Utilizing the lead in the second half, the Eagles didn’t give anything easy to Washington, allowing only six and seven points in the third and fourth quarters, as the Eagles coasted to their first win of the TVL tournament.

Sevy Wurtz had 29 points, five rebounds, five assists, six steals and a block.

Calyn Baker had 11 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Eden Close, Phoenyx Burnett and Paige Joy each had five points.

Versus number three-ranked Linn, the Eagles lost 63-51.

Linn held the advantage early, holding an 18-13 lead over the Eagles. The second quarter saw less offense, with only 16 total points, with the Eagles slimly outscoring the Bulldogs 9-7 for the quarter and entering halftime trailing 25-22. The Bulldogs were able to create separation in the third quarter, outscoring the Eagles 24-18 to lead 49-40. Both teams went point-for-point in the fourth quarter, which prevented the Eagles from taking the game, thus falling into the secondary bracket.

Sevy Wurtz had 35 points, eight rebounds and five steals.

Paige Joy had six points, two rebounds, a steal and a block.

Phoenyx Burnett and Calyn Baker each had three points.

Versus Blue Valley Randolph, the Eagles won 55-49.

The Eagles held the lead early, commanding a 16-12 lead after the first quarter, before the Rams would be able to take some momentum in the second quarter, outscoring the Eagles 11-8 for the quarter, but the Eagles still held a 24-23 lead entering halftime. Clifton-Clyde got back into their offensive groove in the third quarter, outscoring Blue Valley 18-7 in the quarter to take a much-needed 42-30 lead entering the fourth. The Rams then found their groove in the fourth quarter, scoring a game high 19 points in the quarter, but the Eagles were able to keep the Rams just out of reach and able to take the 55-49 victory.

Sevy Wurtz had 37 points, seven rebounds and six steals.

Paige Joy had eight points and four rebounds.

Ellie Wurtz had six points and three rebounds.
