Hosting the substate championship in a rematch with top-seeded TVL foe Centralia, the Clifton-Clyde girls basketball team had its season ended 69-57.
Centralia jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead to open the game, with the Eagles getting on the board with a pair of Sevy Wurtz free throws. The Eagles fought hard on offense to keep themselves in the game and keep the Tigers from pulling away, but a late basket gave Centralia a 26-15 lead after one quarter.
After a slow offensive start to the second quarter, Centralia pulled away thanks to a 7-2 run, to lead 33-17. The Eagles tried to stop the bleeding with an exchange of baskets, but a late Tiger three made it a 37-21 game entering halftime.
Centralia opened the third quarter with a 10-2 spurt and pushed its lead to over 24. Clifton-Clyde’s offense found its rhythm, but the Tigers kept pace with the Eagles to lead 57-36 entering the fourth quarter.
After trailing 66-43 halfway through the final quarter, the Eagles would close the game on a 14-3 run, but the comeback would fall short, as Clifton-Clyde fell 69-57, for the final game of seniors Sevy Wurtz, Calyn Baker, Phoenyx Burnett and Jayla Robbins’ high school basketball careers.
