WASHINGTON, Kan. — Competing in the first round of the TVL Tournament, the Clifton-Clyde boys basketball team defeated number 10-ranked Linn and Blue Valley in overtime last Tuesday.
Versus number 10-ranked Linn, the Eagles won 55-44.
Clifton-Clyde pumped out to a 20-11 lead after the first quarter, before Linn snatched the momentum with a 19-9 second quarter that saw the Bulldogs take a slim 30-29 lead at halftime. The third quarter was an even more defensive battle, with both teams only managing to score seven points each, so Linn held a 37-36 lead entering the fourth. Clifton-Clyde exploded in the fourth quarter. While the Eagles still held Linn to seven points in the fourth quarter, the Eagles scored 19 points to take the convincing 55-44 win and advance in the TVL tournament.
Emitt Tiemeyer led in scoring with 15 points, five rebounds and a steal.
Landon Begnoche had 13 points, three assists, three blocks and five steals.
Ryan LeClair had 10 points, four rebounds and three steals.
Versus Blue Valley, the Eagles won 56-53 in overtime.
Both teams went back and forth in the first quarter, with the Rams holding the early 14-12 lead after one quarter, but the Eagles roared in the second quarter, holding Blue Valley to only five points while scoring 15 to take a 27-19 lead at halftime. The Rams got their offensive momentum back in the third quarter, outscoring the Eagles 16-10 for the quarter, but the Eagles would still hold a slim 37-35 lead entering the fourth. The Eagles were able to go point-for-point with the Rams for most of the quarter, after being tied with less than a minute to go. Blue Valley made a basket to hold a 49-47 lead, before the Eagles got a pair of free throws by Emitt Tiemeyer to force overtime. The Eagles held a 54-53 lead in overtime with a minute to go. The Rams missed a shot and were forced to foul, with Ryan LeClair hitting two free throws to put the Eagles up three before Blue Valley missed the game-tying three.
Tiemeyer led in scoring with 18 points and had five rebounds and four assists.
Luke Nobert had 10 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocks.
Landon Begnoche had eight points, four rebounds and a steal.
