Eagles defeat Hoxie 8-7, fall to Tigers in state tourney

LUCAS — Competing in the K-18 State Tournament in Lucas, the Clifton-Clyde Eagles K-18 team went 1-1 to fall to the consolation game and will face Atwood on Wednesday, July 30.

Round one: Clifton-Clyde defeats Hoxie 8-7.

After falling bey8hd 3-0 in the first two innings, the Eagles finally got on the board in the third inning with two runs from Easton Knoettgen and Emitt Tiemeyer, and then took the lead in the top of the fourth with three runs scored by Jacob Clairmont, Knoettgen, and Isiah Jackson to make it a 5-3 game. Hoxie returned with four runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth to retake the lead 7-5.

The Eagles’ offense kept the pressure on in the fifth, with a solo run by Cooper Girard in the fifth to make it a one-run game, before a pair of runs in the sixth by Knoettgen and Tiemeyer gave the Eagles the 8-7 lead. The defense held strong and kept Hoxie off the board in the bottom of the sixth and seventh to take the game and advance.

Round two: Clay Center defeated Clifton-Clyde 15-1.

The Tigers came out on fire, scoring 14 runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 14-0 lead. The Eagles scored their lone run of the game in the top of the second, thanks to Brennan Zahm, who also had the only hit for the Eagles (a double), and was brought in by Cooper Girard. Clay Center scored one more run in the bottom of the second to make it a 15-1 game, and after not being able to score in the top of the third, the Tigers won by run-rule to advance to the championship game to face Beloit. Clifton-Clyde will face Atwood in the consolation round after Atwood lost 11-1 to Beloit.
