Eagles sweep Wakefield Tournament; fall to Valley Heights, Doniphan West

WAKEFIELD — Traveling south to compete in the Wakefield tournament and getting back to a .500 percent winning percentage on the year, the Clifton-Clyde volleyball team earned first place with five straight wins to repeat as tournament champs.

Starting the day versus Flint Hills Christian, the Eagles won 2-0, winning set one 25-11 and set two 25-16.

In match two versus Peabody-Burns, the Eagles won 2-0. After a dominating 25-7 set one win, the Eagles held on to win set two 25-19.

In match three versus Blue Valley Randolph, the Eagles went 2-1. Winning the first set 25-23, dropping the second set 25-22, and winning set three 25-21.

After sweeping pool play, the Eagles matched up with Pike Valley, with the Eagles winning 2-0. The Eagles won set one 25-10 and defeated the Panthers in set two, 25-11.

In the semifinal match, the Eagles defeated Republic County 2-0. After a close 25-20 set one win, the Eagles slammed the door with a 25-11 set two win to advance to the championship match.

Matching up with Bennington in the championship match, the Eagles swept the Bulldogs 2-0. Winning set one 25-21, the Eagles ground out a 26-24 set two win to win the tournament for the second straight year.

Sevy Wurtz led in kills with 44, Calyn Baker had 37 and Paige Joy had 36. Scout Skocny led in digs with 63, Sevy had 39, Baker had 36. Joy led in blocks with 11, Baker had 10 and Sevy had seven. Sevy led in assists with 59 while Jordi Fahey had 56. Sevy led in aces with 16, Baker had 12 and Skocny and Fahey had eight.

Heading on the road for a triangular at Valley Heights with Doniphan West also present, the Eagles lost both matches.

In match one, the Eagles lost to Doniphan West 25-17 and 25-18.

Ellie Wurtz was the leader in kills with five, Joy and Baker each had four. Joy and Finley Knoettgen each had one block. Skocny led in digs with 10 and Baker had seven. Sevy led in assists with 11 and Fahey had five.

In match two, the Eagles lost to Valley Heights 25-12 and 25-14.

Baker led in kills with six and Knoettgen had three. Skocny had two aces and Sydney Huncovsky had one. Skocny also led in digs with 12 and Sevy had six.
