Girls Tennis competes in 14-team Salina Central Invite

SALINA — Heading south for a major 14-team Salina Central Invite, the Concordia High School girls’ tennis team picked up six wins, as the second-smallest school in attendance.

In singles, McKayla Cherney finished in 19th place with a 3-2 record. After an 8-0 loss to start the day, Cherney won 8-1 over Voshika Voshisth of Salina Central Maroon and 8-2 over Reagan Murphee of Arkansas City, before dropping the next match 8-5. To close the day, Cherney defeated Dakota Maier of Hays 8-4.

Also in singles, Raylea Studt went 0-3, dropping her three matches 8-0, 8-1, 8-3 for 29th place.

In doubles, Kinzee Motes and Alexa Jordan went 1-3 and finished in 16th place. The pair opened the day with an 8-6 win over Kaytlen Young and An L i of Hays before dropping the next two matches, 8-2, 8-0, and 8-0 to end the day.

Also in doubles, Bailey Conner and Jazlyn Hendershott went 2-1 and finished in 25th place. The pair opened the day with an 8-1 loss, but picked up a pair of wins, 8-4 over Allison Barnds and Yalor Bench of Baldwin, and 8-2 over Hailey White and Danitza Rondan of Sacred Heart.

“It was one of the most beautiful days after two weeks of heat, ” said head coach John Turner. “McKayla placed 19th in singles with 3 wins and 2 losses. Raylea placed 29th in singles. Kinzee/Alexa placed 16th in doubles, with a win in the first round. Jazlyn/Bailey placed 25th in doubles, with 2 wins and 1 loss. We played in a 32-team bracket with 14 teams. We played several games with teams we usually don’t see, getting some valuable experience.”
