Kansas-Nebraska Radio Club to participate in National Amateur Radio Field Day

Posted

GLASCO, Kan. — Members of the Kansas-Nebraska Radio Club (KNRC) will be participating in the annual national Amateur Radio Field Day exercise on June 28-29, 2025, at VFW Post 7697, located at 601 N. Railroad Ave, Glasco, Kansas 67445.

Since 1933, ham radio operators across North America have set up temporary radio stations in public locations during Field Day to showcase the science and skill of Amateur Radio. This exciting 24-hour event is open to the public, and all are encouraged to attend. Activities will begin with station setup on Saturday, June 28 at 10 a.m.

The Kansas-Nebraska Radio Club was originally founded in 1927 as the Night Owl Amateur Radio Club in Concordia, Kansas. Over the years, the club has expanded to include members from both Kansas and Nebraska and has undergone two name changes. For Field Day 2025, KNRC members will be operating on emergency power and utilizing their Emergency Communications Trailer to demonstrate ham radio’s vital role in disaster response.

For over a century, Amateur Radio—also known as Ham Radio—has enabled individuals from all walks of life to explore electronics, experiment with communications, and provide critical public service during emergencies, all without relying on cell phones or the internet. Field Day highlights ham radio’s unique ability to operate reliably under almost any condition and from virtually any location, forming an independent communication network.

In 2023, more than 35,000 participants across thousands of locations took part in Field Day activities. The event continues to be the most popular on-the-air radio event held annually in the U.S. and Canada.

Anyone can become a licensed Amateur Radio operator. There are over 725,000 licensed hams in the United States, ranging in age from 9 to 100. With local clubs like KNRC, getting started in ham radio is both accessible and rewarding for those in North Central Kansas and beyond.

In recognition of the importance of Amateur Radio, the Mitchell County Commissioners have officially declared June 22-28, 2025, as AMATEUR RADIO WEEK in Mitchell County.
