The Clifton-Clyde High School girls’ basketball team, seeded fourth overall, rolled to a 72-9 home win over the Lawrence-Bishop Seabury Academy Seahawks in the opening round of the Class 1A-Division I sub-state tournament played last Monday night.
Clifton-Clyde (16-5) advances to the sub-state semifinals and will host Frankfort at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Frankfort, seeded 12th, slipped past Washington County 57-55 in overtime in a first-round game.
Top-seeded Centralia received a bye in the opening round.
Eighth-seeded Onaga downed ninth-seeded Rural Vista, 56-43.
Centralia will host Rural Vista on Saturday.
The championship game will be played on March 7 at Centralia.
Clifton-Clyde raced to a 26-3 first-quarter lead on Bishop Seabury Academy.
The Eagles outscored the Seahawks 12-2 in the second period and led 38-5 at halftime.
Clifton-Clyde poured in 32 points in the third quarter to four for Bishop Seabury, and it was a 70-9 game.
With a running clock, the Eagles added two points in the final stanza and shut out the Seahawks.
“It was a good opportunity to get all of the girls into the game,” Clifton-Clyde coach Kieran Wurtz said.
Sevy Wurtz led the way for Clifton-Clyde with 24 points.
Mylee Hammond knocked down four three-point shots and finished with 15 points for the Eagles.
Clifton-Clyde connected on 11 threes in the game.
“We shot the ball pretty well from the outside and we will need to do that to be successful this postseason,” Wurtz said. “We are looking forward to the challenge of playing Frankfort at home on Saturday.”
Clifton-Clyde split a pair of Twin Valley League road games on the final weekend of the regular season.
The Eagles defeated Axtell 54-45 on February 21.
Wurtz scored 27 points in the game.
Calyn Baker finished with 10 points.
Linn knocked off Clifton-Clyde 50-46 in a makeup game on February 22.
