Lady Eagles top Frankfort 56-31, advance to sub-state finals

Four players scored in double figures to lead the Clifton-Clyde High School girls basketball team to a 56-31 victory over Frankfort in the Class 1A-Division I sub-state game it hosted on March 1.

Sevy Wurtz led the balanced Clifton-Clyde attack with 13 points. She also had five rebounds, three assists and four steals.

Mylee Hammond and Jadelynn Bowen tossed in 12 points each for the Eagles.

Lillian Steinbrock finished with 11 points, six assists and five steals.

Rylie Wunderle had a team-high six rebounds to go with six points.

Fourth-ranked Clifton-Clyde (17-5) advances to the sub-state championship game and will play second-ranked and unbeaten Centralia (20-0) on its home floor in the title game at 7:30 Friday night.

Centralia thumped Onaga 64-29 in the other semifinal game.

In a previous meeting this season between the Twin Valley League foes, Centralia knocked off Clifton-Clyde 64-35 back on January 3.

Clifton-Clyde led Frankfort 10-6 after one quarter of play in the semifinal matchup.

The Eagles limited the Wildcats to five points in the second period, and scored 13 to go up 23-11 at halftime.

Clifton-Clyde outscored Frankfort 17-12 in the third quarter, and led 40-23.

The Eagles doubled up the Wildcats 16-8 in the final stanza.

Clifton-Clyde shot 43 percent (20 of 43) from the field and 80 percent (12 of 15) from the free throw line.

The Eagles came up with 16 steals in the game.
