75 Years Ago—1950

Concordia was in the list of cities of more than 3,000 population that were not treating raw sewage, and Dr. John Porter, State Board of Health member, stated that Concordia was out of line in that there was no treatment of any kind prior to dumping raw sewage into the Republican River… according to Mrs. Clyde Short, postmaster in Concordia, cuts in postal services would include carriers making mail deliveries only once daily…  movies of the third annual national model airplane contest held at Detroit were shown at the Lions club regular meeting, where about 25 local model airplane enthusiasts were guests… “Trial by Jury,” a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, was presented by the high school vocal music department, directed by Miss Margaret Nelson. Dean Snavely, Jean Ann Harman, Jerome Johnson, Ronnie Gamble, Ralph Lewis and Bob Powers held leading vocal parts. … friends of Miss Jane Collins, former Cloud County superintendent and one of the the pioneer rural teachers of the county, met at her home on the old Collins homestead southwest of Concordia. The women brought  a picnic lunch and the men brought all equipment needed to build a telephone line…  “Scroungers” girls softball team, made up of members Doris Minard, pitcher; Louise Gile, catcher; Jo Stone, first base; Neva Davis, second base; Olivene Gagnon, third base; Treva Johnson, left field; Helen Bulthaup, center, Louise Cleveland, right field; and Marie Gile, shortstop, went to Norway where they took the first game of the season with a score of 3 to 2… “Mr. Cavalier,” in original and colorful costume, paraded in Concordia in his musical car, heading a procession bearing “Cavalier” banners. After the parade, “Mr. Cavalier” visited downtown stores and passed out complimentary packages of Cavalier cigarettes… colored quarters of oleo were 35 cents a pound at Cook’s Food Store…

60 Years Ago—1965

City police got a call about a monkey on a light pole between Sixth and Seventh on Cedar Street. The police and Western Light linemen finally managed to get Jocko returned to his owner, Bob Maley…  Concordia’s Mike Reeves received first-place awards for the Class A 120-yard high and 180-yard low hurdles at the 30th Annual Fort Hays Relays. Teammate Keith Christensen won the Class A shot put with a record-breaking 53-7… Kenneth Wisby and David Peltier went to Kansas City to take pre-induction physical exams for the armed forces… Murrell Thomas was fined $5 for operating a row boat on Buffalo creek without having a life preserver on board…  Tana Sherwood of Concordia showed the grand champion bull at the North Central Kansas Canton Brown Swiss Breeders show in Glasco… Sheryl Fleming, Beverly Fleming, Susan Hattan, Helen Marie Foster, Karla Stangel, Gayla Mayfield, Christine Smith and Kathleen Collins, students of Sister Devota, music instructor at Notre Dame high school, took part in piano auditions at Marymount College… the 38th annual Easter picnic was held at the John O. Jackson home at Jamestown… Miss Carol Menzies had been hired as Summer Playground supervisor… Jack Lemmon and Virna Lisi were starring in “How to Murder Your Wife,” showing at the Brown Grand… 

50 Years Ago—1975

Concordia merchants, civic clubs and the high school band met the Wichita Boosters special train at the Santa Fe depot, as the Wichita goodwill ambassadors made their second major stop in their 37th annual tour… Fred Drury, the only Concordia thin clad placing in the K.U. relays, high school division, tied for fourth place in the high jump event… Concordia mail was delayed for a day due to a derailment on the Rock Island line at Bala… when the G. N. Club met with Miss Maude and Miss Alice Moberly, there was a handkerchief exchange… Miss Anna Campbell celebrated her 102nd birthday… Robert Kimmal, Keith Burt and Don Lewis, Concordia students from the high school vocational agriculture department, attended the Black and White Holstein show at Linn…

25 Years Ago—2000

Laureli Kitchener had decided to step down as Concordia’s volleyball coach after guiding the Panthers to 10 state championships…  Concordia students earning superior ratings for solo performance at the Regional Solo/Small Ensemble Music Festival in Manhattan were Anne Bryant, Crystal Dillow, Brittany Toll, Lindsay Hanson, Sandra Genereux and Teri Istas… Girl Scout Troop 882, under the leadership of Loleta Deaver, County Extension Agent Pat Gerhardt and her assistant, Mary Florea, presented a talent show and provided and served the meal for Widowed Friends…  newly formed advisory board at Beverly Healthcare-Concordia included members Tootie McCall, Mike Derousseau, Shirley Johnson, Carol Saint and Joe Goedert… in a drawing at Concordia Furniture & Carpet, Kevin Meredith Jones won a limited edition replica of the original La-Z-Boy recliner circa 1928… Concordia High School senior Spencer Farha signed a basketball letter-of-intent with Bethany College… Kenneth Marcotte was honored for 30 years of service to Alstom Power Air Preheater Inc. … 

10 Years Ago—2015

Kathy Ashland received the Girl Scout Volunteer of Excellence Award… Amanda Rall was the new Concordia Area Chamber of Commerce Director/Broadway Plaza Event coordinator…  CTI John Deere of Concordia announced that three of its employees had achieved distinguished training milestones from John Deere University: Roger Hardaway, Adam Simmons, Master Service Technician; Dave Canfield, Master Servicer Manager…  Concordia High School senior Molly Adams, a state placer in the shot put last season signed a letter-of-intent to compete in track and field at Cloud County Community College… Concordia VFW Auxiliary received first place in the artistic/decorative use of poppies category at the District #4 VFW and Auxiliary Spring Convention in Salina… a ribbon cutting was held for Brown Comfort Professionals…

The lights at Harold M. Clark Stadium would be turned on from 8:20-8:40 p.m. each Friday night through May 22 as part of the “Be the Light” campaign to honor and support the Concordia High School Class of 2020… Robert A. Walsh filed for re-election to the position of Cloud County attorney…
