Torrential rain, which totaled 4.67 inches in 90 minutes, sent water spilling through a break in the dam of a small lake in the south of town… a consignment of White Face heifers, which averaged 330 pounds, brought $28.05 at the Concordia Sales Pavilion… pedestal arrangements of white snapdragons and gladioli and tall candelabra flanked the alter at a pretty spring wedding when Miss Imogene Snavely married Mr. Robert Trost at the Huscher EUB church… May 13 was “Official Straw Hat Day” in Concordia— time to put away that battered, winter-weary felt and strut in a new straw… Jamestown assessor Ted French reported at the end of his assessment that Jamestown had added 32 residents to reach a population of 511… a new nuisance, powder post beetles, had eaten the bottom drawers out of a bedroom set in the Price home near Wayne. Ground-breaking ceremonies for the Frank Carlson Library were held in Concordia, with Senator Frank Carlson turning the first spade of dirt… on May 1, the Concordia Weather Bureau completed 90 years of service in the area. The service had grown from an upstairs one-room-with-a-thermometer, a warning flag at the top of an 80-foot pole and a rain gauge at the newspaper office, to an all modern building with the latest equipment… Duane Lewis, Tom Pearson and Rich Adams, Concordia High School students of Wayne Dempsey, drafting instructor at the high school, all brought back trophies from their entries in the drawing competition at the Fort Hays Kansas State College Industrial Arts Fair… Marymount College of Kansas students from the area received degrees: Peggy Owensby, BS in nursing; Ronald Deneault, BA in economics and business administration; Mrs. Eudora Petersen, BS in nursing; Mrs. Marilyn Hessee, BA in English; Mrs. Marlene Seward, BS in nursing; Ellen Paulsen, BS in elementary education… Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Charbonneau announced the adoption of their daughter whom they had named Valicia Kaye… both CHS students, Dan Hittle won third place in entomology and Dan Whitney was seventh in agronomy at the State FFA Contest in Manhattan… Joe Jindra of Glasco received one of Cloud County Community College’s filmmaker awards for his movie “Tie a Yellow Ribbon”… Jackie Fisher, Jim Lowell, Mark Eaton, Mike Briggs, David Martin, Alan Souchek, Scott Houser, Brian Predmore and Darcy Kunze received first place Rotary club bowling tournament team trophies… Darrel Hosie, Cloud County Extension Agent, was initiated into Epsilon Sigma Phi, honorary Extension fraternity… Panther tracksters Doug Montoya (9:58 in the two mile) and Joel Davenport (20-8 leap in long jump) qualified for the Kansas High School State meet by virtue of their performances in the Class 3A Regional Contest…
