75 Years Ago—1950

At commencement exercises, graduating seniors of Concordia high school were told by Dr. Orlo Chogull, pastor of the First Presbyterian church of Topeka, that they were at a crossroad to become either an additional part of the world’s problem or a part of the world’s problem solution… Pat Lenke was awarded a medal at the final high school assembly of the year for winning the girls golf tourney at the Concordia links with a score of 26 for four holes. Also competing were Donna Woods, Ann Hanson, and Charlotte Huncovsky… the first twins of the year born at St. Joseph hospital arrived May 23 and were twin girls, born to Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Hanson, Clyde, and had been named Carolyn and Marilyn… winners of awards in seventh and eighth grade scholarship tests in Concordia were Valerie Nanninga, Darlene Jewett, Earl Guiot, Carl White and Jimmy Walker… May seemed to be shooting for a record rainfall, because as of May 26, rainfall so far during the month had totaled 9.23 inches, the most moisture in any May since 1903 when 13.15 was received during May… “The Prince of Peace,” advertised as the greatest story ever told, was a picture that everyone should see, according to C. P. Rogers, manager of the Brown Grand theater…  Larry Herman, Allen Householter, Teddy Peters, Richard Wagner and Donald Lysell were inducted into Cub Scout Pack 31… the public was invited to a program of events as Concordia B. P. O. Elks Lodge observed its golden anniversary. Charter officers were Herbert W. Burns, tiler; Hilary Wentz, chaplain; Charles H. Kutz, secretary; Woodson Sewell, inner guard; James Foster, esteemed lecturing knight; Cecil H. Rice, esteemed leading knight; A. L. Goodreau, exalted ruler; Ben Meadows, loyal knight; and Austin Huscher, esquire… Mrs. Orval Locke and Marjetta Chilcott, employees at Locke’s Drug Store, were in Wichita attending Elizabeth Arden’s School… Humes Motor Company was advertising the Studebaker Champion, 6-pass., 2-door custom sedan, $1557.09… 

60 Years Ago—1965

Machinery at the Ski-Bee Distributing company and the Ski-Bee Portion Pac plant, Concordia’s newest industry, located on North Washington Street, started turning officially… Bernard Marcotte was valedictorian at Notre Dame high school and Sheryl Fleming was salutatorian… Allan Seifert, a graduate from Kansas City School of Watchmaking, was employed at the Nault Jewelry store… Mrs. Tom Richard and son, Thomas Leon, were honored at a layette shower, given by Mrs. A. I. Reeves, Mrs. Larry Campbell and Mrs. Don Istas… lucky Bob Nordquist, employee of the Downtown Phillips “66” service station, received $50 from the oil company’s “Mystery Man,” and a few days later he served the Gates company salesman and received a billfold containing a silver dollar bill. Rick Breault, manager of the station, received a silver pocket knife for having a complete line of the company’s auto belts… Mrs. Dean Townsdin won a five-minute shopping spree at Paul’s ThriftWay supermarket in a soft drink contest, and in the allotted time she netted armloads of the best steaks, three hams, several pounds of coffee and detergent… … Boogaart’s sponsored a School’s Out Show at the Brown Grand Theatre where kids up to age 15 could see “Wizard of Bagdad,” plus a cartoon, for free…   

50 Years Ago—1975

Wayne Fowler Jr. of Concordia was one of 12 graduating seniors at Kansas University with majors in the Division of Biological Sciences who was honored for his outstanding undergraduate research… 1975 Cloud County Community College honor graduates included Pamela Johnson, Ivy Kay Birdsall, Victoria Sulanka, Christine Reimer, Carol Lagemann, Lea Ann Wiltse, Denise Folkerts, Mike Fuller, Glenda Jo Lowdermilk, all of Concordia; Mary Anne Hart, Kirk Gray, Jamestown…Pastor and Mrs. David Campbell were the new youth pastors at Concordia Wesleyan church…  John Geisler, Ron Brooks and Willie Geisler caught a 30-pound flathead in the Republican River… Bill Garlow was elected president of the junior class at Mid-America Nazarene college in Olathe… flower displays from the ikebana class at Cloud County Community College were featured in a display at the Cloud County Bank… Cloud County ASCS employees receiving length of service awards were Janice Cyr, 20 years; Anita Nelson, 15 years; Wilfred Thoman and Vincent Link, 10 years…

25 Years Ago—2000

Recent dry conditions and low streamflow in the Republican River caused a temporary shutdown of junior wells in the area by the State of Kansas Water Office… having started in the laundry facility in 1972, Anna Chapin was honored with a cake and a rose bush for her yard after retiring from Sunset Home… Scott and Dawn Seifert, Clyde, announced the birth of their daughter, Abbie Pearl…  Jade Kerr, who received a bachelor’s degree in telecommunications management from DeVry Institute of Technology in February, had accepted a position with H.L.Yoh, a contracting firm located in Overland Park… Kyle Krier and Spencer Farha, who each hit better than .400, were named co-recipients of the Concordia High School Outstanding Senior Baseball Player Award… at the American Legion Department Convention in Great Bend, Richard Blackwell, Aurora, was installed as the new commander of the 6th District… representing Concordia at the state track meet were Destiny Breault, Taby Robbins, Amy Anderson, Natalie Wellendorf, Maria Letourneau, Jill Williams, Andy Lewis, Katie Baldwin, Lorissa Wright, Ken Keil, Dustin Ringer, Garrett Farha, John Christensen, Greg Smith, Josh Williams, John Hake, Russell Herman, Beau Ringer and Matt Bartz…

10 Years Ago—2015

Sister Marcia Allen, president of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Concordia, had an audience with Pope Francis at the Vatican… the C. Carl Cunningham Rotary Scholarship Fund awarded scholarships to CHS seniors Zoe Walsh and Isaac Sprague…the Concordia High School girls track team won seven events on its way to capturing the North Central Kansas League title… Elma Trost celebrated her 99th birthday… CHS sophomore Brennen Acree earned his second straight trip to state in golf…

5 Years Ago—2020

The Brown Grand Theatre was selling rows of the 94-year-old seats to raise money for the “Seating the Next Generation” campaign… Izaiah Grogan, senior at Kansas Wesleyan University, was named the recipient of the Campbell/Hurd Emergency Management Award, honoring him for his multiple leadership roles in the Cadet Corps, the group of top emergency management and criminal justice students… Kassidy Leiszler, the first Concordia High School female wrestler to place in the Kansas High School Girls Wrestling State Championships, had signed to wrestle at Baker University… Darrel and Margo Hosie, Concordia, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on May 29…
