Sidewalk closed on Washington St., repairs to last weeks

Posted

CONCORDIA – The west sidewalk along Washington Street from The Blade-Empire south to the alley is closed for repairs. The adjacent parking spaces on Washington Street will also be unavailable during this time. Pedestrians are asked to stay clear from this area while repairs are made. Please respect the barricades that are in place to avoid injury.

“Our public storm sewer system is a maze of underground structures and pipes that carry stormwater north and east of town. In downtown Concordia, the storm sewer system is made of concrete walls and floors, with concrete lids that serve the dual purpose of a public sidewalk. When these concrete walls of the storm sewer fail, a portion of the sidewalk can also fail leaving a trip hazard with a void below that is about four feet deep,” says Concordia public works director Shane Kisby. “When these failures are discovered, our Public Works crew works quickly to fix them in an effort to keep the public safe and our businesses open.”

Repair work is expected to take two to three weeks. The City thanks the public and businesses in the immediate vicinity for their patience as these repairs are made.
