CHAPMAN — In the first round of the 4A regionals, the Concordia High School softball team traveled to, and matched up with NCKL foe Chapman, with the Panthers falling 6-2 to the Irish.
The Irish scored first in the bottom of the first, with the Irish getting a leadoff single. A fielding error put two runners on base, and they were able to bring one across home plate.
In the second inning, the Panthers established a tone after Camleigh Hake got on base with a leadoff double, and Alyssa Patterson reached base on a fielder’s choice. Katelyn Reedy would get walked and make it to third before the inning ended, but not before Hake and Patterson gave Concordia a 2-1 lead.
Jaylin Roush and the Panthers handed Chapman a three-up-three-down third inning, but Chapman limited Concordia to only one hit, a Hake single.
Chapman started to build up some offense in the bottom of the fourth, getting a trio of base runners off of Panther mistakes, two errors and a walk, before out three left two in scoring position. Catelin Benyshek was hit by a pitch, and that’s all the Panther offense mustered in the fourth.
In the top of the fifth, the Panthers got two base runners after Kinsleigh Bethune reached first on an error, stole second, and made it to third on a Roush single, who then stole second, but out two and three left them stranded. The Irish took over in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five runs on seven hits and one walk.
The Panthers got a pair of baserunners on in the top of the seventh, but out three left them stranded in scoring position, and the game was over, 6-2 Chapman.
Chapman would go on to defeat Andale/Garden Plain 5-3 and will represent the NCKL alongside Wamego and Rock Creek, in the 4A softball state tournament.
