Sue Ann Miller Atherton, age 83, of Topeka, Kansas, passed from this earth, Wednesday, December 4, 2024.
She was born on September 18, 1941, in Ark City, Kansas. She grew up in the Topeka area where she attended Washburn Rural High School. She married Gale Atherton in Wakarusa, Kansas, July 11, 1959. They celebrated 65 years together.
They had three daughters, Tammy (Bill) Britt, Concordia, Lisa Jones, and Karen (Tracy) Clemens, Wichita.
Sue and Gale started their married life in Wakarusa. They moved to Winfield in 1970 and then relocated to Concordia in 1977. They returned to Topeka.
Sue was well known for her musical abilities, singing, and playing piano for many weddings and funerals over the years. She worked many years as a CNA. She made the front page of the Winfield Courier as the “Smiling Crossing Guard” for Trinity Lutheran School. In Concordia she was well known at the Sweet Shop. She later worked at Whitney Plumbing as the office clerk. In Topeka she worked in the office of Ameripride until she retired.
Sue attended and played the piano at many churches over the years, including Highland Park Baptist Church.
Sue is survived by her husband Gale of the home; daughters, Tammy (Bill) and Karen (Tracy); eight grandchildren, Natasha (Austin), Micheal (Jaimie), Michela (Mark), Brad, Kyle, Bradley, Shelby, Tiffany; ten great-grandchildren, Hunter, Ariana, Lawson, Brantley, Emberly, Jordi, Berklee, Heather (Brett), Harlee, Lane, and one great-great-grandchild, Brayleigh; sisters, Glenda Brown Chelton, Barbara Cales Leffew, Sharon Cales Flower, and brothers, Warren Cales and Leroy Cales.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Pauline Cales; brother, Jerald Cales; daughter, Lisa Atherton Jones and granddaughter, Tara Jones Hansen.
Funeral will be at Highland Park Baptist Church, Sat., December 14 at 11:00 a.m. Family viewing at 9:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. public viewing. Arrangements by Peaceful Rest Funeral Chapel, 401 SW Harrison St., Topeka, Kansas 66603.
