In a tale of two teams, the Cloud County Community College Thunderbirds fell once again, this time blowing a 14-point halftime lead to number 14 ranked Coffeyville, before falling 74-67.
The two teams went blow for blow to open the game and found themselves tied at 21 points with 8:19 remaining. Cloud’s offense would catch fire for the remainder of the half, going on an 18-4 run to take a 39-25 lead heading to the locker room.
The Red Ravens were held under 30 percent shooting in the first half, compared to Cloud’s 45 percent. Cloud did not register a single turnover in the first half to Coffeyville’s 10.
Coffeyville would come out of the locker room with their usual mojo back, slowly chipping away at the Cloud lead, and with 8:26 remaining, the game was tied at 48-48. Cloud would do their best to keep the game in grasp, going back and forth in a fight for the lead. But in the final 3:30, Coffeyville would rip the game away, going on a 14-7 run to hand Cloud the 74-67 loss.
Coffeyville shot over 54 percent from the field in the second half, compared to only 34 percent from the T-Birds.
Keyon Garrett-Miller had 15 points, two rebounds, two assists, a block, and a steal.
Elidjah Savane had 15 points, eight rebounds, two steals, and a block.
Matthew Garber had 11 points, three rebounds, and a steal.
Syncere Burnette had 10 points, six rebounds, five assists, and a steal.
After picking up a forfeit win in Independence, the Cloud County Community College men’s basketball team found itself in the loss column once again at Hutchinson, 98-73, thanks to a Blue Dragon second half explosion.
Cloud started out on the right pace, building a quick 13-4 lead in just past five minutes in, but the second part of the half would not be so kind. After being up by nine with 9:10 remaining, Hutchinson would grab the lead with 3:40 remaining, 24-22, and would take a six-point lead into halftime, 34-28.
Syncere Burnette had half of the team’s points, 14, with the next highest T-Bird scorer, Elidjah Savane, having six.
Both teams’ offenses were locked in to start the second half, scoring on 11 of the first 12 attempts from the field, but the T-Birds’ flow would get interrupted. Hutch would push the lead to double digits, and it would explode to a 20-point lead with 10 minutes to play.
As Cloud tried to fight back into the game but the T-Birds would run out of gas with five minutes to play, as Hutchinson took a 15-point lead and took it all the way up to 28 before handing Cloud the 98-73 loss.
Savane had 26 points and five rebounds.
Burnette had 20 points.
Amare Johnson and Fallou Koite each had eight points and four rebounds.
