CLAY CENTER — Heading to nearby Clay Center for a quadrangular, the Concordia High School boys tennis team fought the weather with reduced numbers.

In number one singles, Dakota Valcoure went 0-3.

In number two singles, Keltyn Newton went 1-2, with the win being 6-4 over Clay Center’s AJ VanCleave in the opening match.

In number one doubles, Eli Henderson and Noah Wood went 0-4.

“It was a questionable weather day for tennis. We showed up, and the courts were soaked. We were able to get things dried up and play,” said head coach John Turner.

At the eight-school 16-team Smoky Valley Invite in Lindsborg, the Panthers totaled five wins.

In singles, Noah Wood finished 11th with a 2-2 record. Wood defeated Pratt’s Jimmy Bushnell 8-0 and Abilene’s Christian Garcia 8-7(5), but fell to Haven and Clay Center’s singles player. Keltyn Newton went 0-3.

In doubles, Eli Henderson and Dakota Valcoure went 2-2. After dropping the first two matches to Hesston and Clay Center, the pair defeated Pratt’s Liam Gordon and Calvin Greem, then defeated fellow Panthers Ayden Nutsch and Creighton Nelson 8-3. Nutsch and Nelson went 1-3, with their win coming 8-2 over Haven’s Dax McAdoo and Jackson Doherty.
