WAMEGO—Dealing with sickness and the heat last Thursday at the Wamego, a wounded Concordia girls’ golf team competed in the Wamego Invitational for their second match of the week.

Anna Widen was the top panther with a score of 113, good for 25th place.

Bella Stuber was 27th with a score of 115.

Abby Herman was 45th with a score of 126.

Mya Niehues and Maddie Bowers withdrew due to illness, while Preslee Marsh couldn’t attend due to sickness as well.

Addison Douglass of Wamego was first individually with a score of 69, and Wamego won the team title.

The varsity team will have a much-needed break as their next meet is Sept. 25 at Marysville.

Travelling south to Salina for the Salina Central Invitational at the Municipal Golf Course, the Panthers played up, as the second smallest school with eight 5A or 6A teams, with the Panthers taking fifth.

Maddie Myers of Manhattan won the individual title with a score of 68. Manhattan also won the team title.

Mya Niehues was the top Panther with a second-place finish and a score of 70, tying Cassie Lowell’s 18-hole record score.

Maddie Bowers tied for 23rd with a score of 97.

Anna Widen tied for 36th with a score of 107.

Bella Stuber tied 44th with a score of 111.

“As a team, the girls shot 33 strokes better at this tournament than they did last year,” said head coach Gene Rundus.

“We were above our home tournament low from last week, but it was good enough to place fifth overall and place us above teams like Hutchinson, Derby, Hays, Salina South and Great Bend.

Mya had an outstanding day and was only two strokes from the individual title. Maddie, Anna, and Bella set personal bests and rounded out our strong team showing.”
